Community quarantine has helped stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus, but unfortunately it has also brought a number of problems, among them, the increase in the instances of domestic violence against women and children.
Based on the published report of Philippine Information Agency (PIA) last June 27, 2020, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported that the increase in Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) cases was due to the disruptions brought about the imposition of lockdown in the country. Statistics shows that VAWC cases rose to an all time high of 5,030 with an average of 22 victims per day for the lockdown period from March 16 to June 16, 2020, as compared to 3,651 for the period of January to March 15, 2020.
As the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) stated on their official website, this kind of crime chooses no time or place. Let us always remain vigilant in our homes and in our communities. If you are, or if you personally know someone being abused, please do not hesitate to seek help to stop the abuse.
Together let us end Violence Against Women!
March is National Women’s Month!
